Chinese Lesson - History of the Asian Cup

CHINA / Tournament Info

History of the Asian Cup

(afcasiancup.com)
Updated: 2007-07-07 21:41

From its humble beginnings in 1956, the AFC Asian Cup has developed into
the continent's premier football tournament, bringing together the top
national teams from the length and breadth of Asia to compete for one of
international football's most sought-after prizes every four years.

The tournament had it roots in the formation of the Asian Football
Confederation in Manila in 1954. The 12 founder members of the AFC sought
to shape the development of the game in Asia and one of the keys to
achieving that aim was the organisation of a regional competition for the
continent's international teams.

Just two years later, the first ever Asian Cup was staged in Hong Kong
with seven of the 12 affiliated national associations vying for the title
of Asia's best football team.

Over half a century later, the Asian Cup has grown to encompass teams
from throughout the continent and has become the barometer by which the
continually changing balance of power in Asian football is measured.

From the dominance of Korea Republic in the early years of the
competition, the Asian Cup became the providence of the mighty Iranians
who won three consecutive tournaments from 1968 to 1976.
During the 1980s, the Gulf states asserted themselves with Kuwait
becoming the first Arab side to win the competition in 1980 before Saudi
Arabia claimed three of the next four championships, reaching the final
five times in a row.

Japan's Asian Cup victories in 1992, 2000 and 2004 signaled a shift in
power back to East Asia at the turn of the Millennium although the highly
competitive nature of the most recent tournament in China is a clear
indication that competition remains keen among the sides looking to be
crowned Asia's top national team.

Learn Mandarin online - Uzbekstan (Group C)

Sports / Teams

Uzbekstan (Group C)

Updated: 2007-07-07 20:38

Hopes were high for Uzbek football when their national team emerged
victorious in their first-ever venture in Asian football in 1994, but the
former Soviet republic have since failed to deliver on the international
stage.

Having gained independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union,
Uzbekistan enjoyed a sensational debut at the 1994 Asian Games as Rustam
Akramov's side swept all before them in Hiroshima, winning all seven of
their games to capture the gold medal. However, the Central Asian side
would be brought back down to earth in the United Arab Emirates two years
later when they took part in the Asian Cup for the first time as they
missed out on the knockout phase of the competition.

Their participation in the 2000 tournament in Lebanon would prove an
embarrassment as Yuri Sarkisyan took charge of the side barely three
months before the tournament commenced following the sudden resignation
of Russian coach Paval Sadryin. Having drawn their opening game with
Qatar 1-1, they were then torn apart by Japan, who thumped the Uzbeks
8-1, the second largest margin in Asian Cup history.

A 5-0 hammering by Saudi Arabia in their final group match meant that
they bowed out of the tournament having conceded an astounding 14 goals
in only three games. They proved a far more competitive outfit four years
later and emerged as one of the tournament favourites in China after
becoming the only team to take maximum points during the opening round,
setting up a pulsating quarter-final in Chengdu against Bahrain. But
there would be no happy ending for the Uzbeks as they went out on
penalties.

There would be further heartache at the hands of the Bahrainis a year
later when they were controversially defeated in a World Cup
qualification play-off by the Gulf state. The Central Asians had a 1-0
home win annulled after a technical error by referee Toshimitsu Yoshida
and the Bahrainis took full advantage, holding Uzbekistan to a 1-1 draw
in the replayed game as they advanced on away goals.

Englishman Bobby Houghton stepped down after the World Cup qualification
exit and former Russian Vladimir Nepomniatchi took charge for the Asian
Cup qualification campaign in 2006. Uzbekistan were the top ranked team
in Group F and they had a solid start with a 5-0 destruction of
Bangladesh in their opener. But a 2-1 defeat against Qatar and a sloppy
2-2 draw in Tashkent against Hong Kong put their qualification hopes in
some jeopardy.

An unconvincing goalless draw in Hong Kong followed before the Uzbeks
finally sealed their place in the finals with a 4-0 victory in Bangladesh
and a 2-0 win against group winners Qatar. With former Uzbekistan U-23
boss Rauf Inileyev now in charge, the Central Asians will be hoping that
they will be able to rediscover their form in Malaysia this July and
improve on their display at the 2004 Asian Cup.

Despite last year's retirement of Kasimov, Inileyev has a talented squad
at his disposal with Dynamo Kiev's Maksim Shatskikh still in his
goal-scoring prime while Server Djeparov has taken over much of the
creative duties since Kasimov stood down.

Chinese Mandarin - Some therapies may hurt pregnancy chance

WORLD / Health

Some therapies may hurt pregnancy chance

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-05 01:29

Alternative therapies such as reflexology and herbal supplements may
reduce a woman's chance of getting pregnant, experts said Wednesday.

Research presented Wednesday at a Lyon meeting of the European Society of
Human Reproduction and Embryology examined the impact of alternative
therapies on women receiving in-vitro fertilization over a year.

Of 800 Danish women followed for the study, 261 tried treatments
including reflexology, herbal supplements, homeopathy, kinesiology and
acupuncture.

The women using such treatments overall were 20 percent less likely to
get pregnant than those who did not, according to researchers Dr. Jacky
Boivin, of Cardiff University, and Dr. Lone Schmidt, from the University
of Copenhagen.

"Doctors tend to think that these kinds of therapies are benign," said
Boivin, who was surprised by the results. "But maybe they're not as
benign as we think they are."

While the study does not provide any definitive answers about the value
of alternative therapies, experts say it raises an important issue.

"We cannot start with the assumption that these therapies do no harm,"
said Dr. Andrea Braverman, director of psychological and complementary
care at Reproductive Medicine Associates in New Jersey. Braverman was not
connected to Boivin's study and is currently running a study to see if
acupuncture helps or hinders pregnancy.

To date, no large-scale, randomized studies have been done looking at the
value of alternative remedies.

In the Danish study, the women most likely to try complementary therapies
also tended to have a worse prognosis. But even after adjusting for this
difference, Boivin said, a discrepancy in the pregnancy rates remained.
All of the women in the study were from a similar socio-economic
background.

"There still seems to be an association between the use of complementary
therapies and the reduced chances for pregnancy," Boivin said.

Because Boivin and Schmidt were unable to disentangle the various
alternative therapies tried they measured all therapies tried, not
individually they could not explain why such treatments might decrease
the pregnancy rate. "We have no idea why pressing on your feet could be
bad for getting pregnant," Boivin said.

Some experts worried the study might be skewed. "The important question
is whether the chicken or the egg came first," said Edzard Ernst,
professor of complementary medicine at Exeter University, who was not
connected to Boivin's work.

"Those women who are more prone to stress and have more health problems
are more likely to try complementary medicine," he said. "So
complementary medicine could only be a marker, and not the cause, of
stress or lower success rates." Ernst said similar results had been found
in looking at the use of alternative therapies in cancer patients.

Experts agreed the lack of data remained a problem. "Anything could have
a positive or negative effect," Braverman said. "But without the
evidence, we have to be cautious."

North Korea to close reactor

Updated: 2007-06-29 22:23

PYONGYANG, North Korea - The UN nuclear watchdog and North Korea have
reached an agreement on how the agency will monitor and verify shutdown
of the country's main nuclear reactor, a top official said Friday.

ship at Gunsan port in Gunsan, south of Seoul, South Korea, Friday, June
29, 2007. [AP]

A team from the International Atomic Energy Agency returned Friday to the
North Korean capital from a two-day trip to the Yongbyon nuclear complex,
broadcaster APTN reported. It was the first IAEA visit to the facility
since UN monitors were expelled from the country in 2002.

"We have concluded this understanding, what our monitoring and
verification activities are in principle," IAEA Deputy Director Olli
Heinonen said in footage shot by APTN. He did not provide specifics of
the agreement.

Heinonen said his team, which was scheduled to leave Pyongyang for
Beijing on Saturday, was preparing to report to the IAEA board of
governors within one week, but noted that the timing of the shutdown was
up to the six countries involved in North Korea nuclear talks.

"This is for the six parties to decide," he said in the APTN footage.
"You have to ask them the time scale. When they do (decide), we will be
ready."

An IAEA official in Vienna, who spoke on condition of anonymity because
he was not authorized to comment to media, said that a board meeting
would likely take place July 9, with the 35 member nations expected to
approve sending the first inspection team to the North as quickly as
possible.

North Korea pledged to close and seal Yongbyon in exchange for economic
aid and political concessions in an agreement with the U.S., China,
Japan, Russia and South Korea. The purpose of the IAEA trip was to
discuss how the agency's inspectors would monitor and verify a shutdown.

UN monitors expressed strong satisfaction with its rare visit to the
North Korean reactor, praising the regime for its cooperation in an
indication Pyongyang is serious about meeting its promise to close the
facility.

Chinese Lesson - Hamas slams nomination of Blair as Mideast Quartet envoy

WORLD / Middle East

Hamas slams nomination of Blair as Mideast Quartet envoy

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-06-28 01:42

The Islamic Resistance Movement ( Hamas) slammed on Wednesday the
nomination of British former Prime Minister Tony Blair as envoy for the
Mideast Quartet.

"Blair isn't a welcomed character because he has never been authentic to
the Palestinian aspirations to end the occupation and free prisoners from
Israeli jails," Hamas spokesman in Gaza Fawzi Barhoum said.

"Blair has always worked under the American umbrella and he was behind
wars and disasters which are still going on in Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan
and Lebanon," said Barhoum.

UN spokeswoman Michele Montas earlier announced the appointment of Tony
Blair as the representative of the Quartet which also groups the United
States, the European Union and Russia.

She said Blair was tasked with mobilizing world assistance for the
Palestinians.

The nomination came shortly after Blair stepped down as prime minister
and was succeeded by British Finance Minister Gordon Brown.

Barhoum accused Blair of "defending Israel's crimes against the
Palestinians and supporting it against our people."

He said he didn't expect that Blair in his new position as the Quartet
envoy "would play a fair role to end the Palestinian cause. "

However, Salam Fayyad, prime minister of Palestinian emergency
government, told reporters that Tony Blair would be "an important
addition to the framework of international dealings with the Palestinians
through the Quartet."

Earlier Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, whose country
is a major Quartet member, told a joint news conference in Ramallah with
President Mahmoud Abbas, "the decision will be announced later today."

Lavrov noted that "the Quartet had agreed on a mandate for a new envoy"
but didn't give more details.

"Russia, as a member of the Quartet, is doing all it can to help the
Palestinians regain unity," he said.

He added that Russia would participate in humanitarian aid to the
isolated Gaza Strip, calling on Israel to take "additional steps and
create an atmosphere to help the peace process."

Moscow ranks as world's priciest city

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-19 10:47

NEW YORK - Moscow is the world's most expensive city for the second year
in a row, thanks to an appreciating ruble and rising housing costs, a new
survey reports.

Red Square in this May 28, 2007 file photo. [Reuters]

The cost of living for expatriates in the Russian capital is nearly 35
percent higher than in New York, which served as the base city for the
survey released Monday.

London, estimated at 26 percent more expensive than New York, climbed
three spots to second place on a strengthening British pound and steep
rental prices.

South Korea's Seoul ranked third, followed closely by Tokyo at No. 4.

The survey by Mercer Human Resource Consulting ranked 143 cities around
the world, measuring the comparative cost of more than 200 areas such as
housing, transportation and food. The findings are designed to help
multinational employers determine compensation for their expatriate
workers.

In Moscow, a luxury two-bedroom apartment will cost an expat $4,000 a
month; a CD rings up at $24.83; one copy of an international daily
newspaper is $6.30; and a fast-food hamburger meal totals $4.80.

A strengthening euro boosted 30 European cities to top spots on the 2007
list - Copenhagen, Geneva, Zurich and Oslo, respectively, placed among
the top 10.

Eight Asian cities made the top 50, though Taipei, plunged 20 places to
No. 48.

New York and Los Angeles were the only two North American cities to rank
among the highest 50, though both fell in the rankings due to a
depreciating US dollar, Mercer reported.

The Big Apple dropped five places to No. 15, while Los Angeles fell to
No. 42 from No. 29 in 2006.

Ranking as the least expensive city for the fifth year in a row was
Paraguay's capital of Asuncion, where the cost of living is half that of
New York, Mercer estimated.

KABUL, Afghanistan - US forces mistakenly killed seven Afghan police and
wounded four in an apparent friendly fire incident early Tuesday in
eastern Afghanistan, Afghan officials said.

The destroyed vehicles are seen at the site after a suicide car bombing
in Gurbuz district of Khost province east of Kabul, Afghanistan on
Monday, June 11, 2007. [AP]

Police manning a remote checkpoint in Nangarhar province said an American
convoy backed by helicopters approached and opened fire despite their
protests and calls for them to stop.

"I thought they were Taliban, and we shouted at them to stop, but they
came closer and they opened fire," said Khan Mohammad, one of the
policemen at the post. "I'm very angry. We are here to protect the Afghan
government and help serve the Afghan government, but the Americans have
come to kill us."

The commander at the post, Esanullah, who goes by one name, said a
helicopter fired rockets, killing seven policemen and wounding four.

A spokeswoman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force said she
had no information that US forces that fall under ISAF's command were
involved. A spokesman for the separate US-led coalition said he was
looking into the report.

There were conflicting reports over how the fighting started.

Zurmai Khan, the Khogyani district chief, said fighting started just
before midnight Monday between Taliban militants and Afghan police, and
two hours into the battle US forces arrived and opened fire on the police.

However, Esanullah and Noragha Zowak, spokesman for the Nangarhar
governor, said no Taliban were involved in the incident.

Khan labeled the incident a "misunderstanding."

"Unfortunately the Americans and the Afghans, the two sides didn't know
it was the other," said Zowak.

Meanwhile, three Afghan civilians were killed and two wounded in the
eastern province of Kunar on Monday after a car drove through an ISAF
checkpoint and soldiers opened fire on it, ISAF said. The car drove
through the checkpoint despite the use of hand gestures and flashing
lights, ISAF said.

A roadside bomb attack 25 miles north of Kandahar city on Monday killed a
Canadian soldier. The soldier, identified as Trooper Darryl Caswell of
the Royal Canadian Dragoons, was the 57th Canadian soldier killed in
Afghanistan, the Canadian military said.

The death brings to at least 78 the number of soldiers killed in
Afghanistan this year, including at least 39 Americans.

Violence has spiked in Afghanistan in recent weeks. More than 2,300
people have died in insurgency-related violence this year, according to
an Associated Press count based on US, NATO and Afghan figures.

In the east, in Paktia province, Afghan police and US-led coalition
troops acting on a tip discovered rocket-propelled grenades, mortar
rounds and bomb-making materials hidden under two animal pens in an
Afghan home. Militants fired machine guns and RPGS at the troops when
they first entered the home, the coalition said in a statement.

The coalition said that local elders "vowed to track down" the bomb maker.

WORLD / America

Bush says Russia not a threat to Europe

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-06-06 20:18

HEILIGENDAMM, Germany - US President George W. Bush said on Wednesday
that Russia did not pose a threat to Europe despite a vow to target the
continent if the US deploys a missile shield in central Europe.

"Russia is not going to attack Europe," Bush told reporters at the start
of a G8 summit on the Baltic coast.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will come face to face with Bush at
the summit, has said Russia will resume its Cold War stance of targeting
its missiles at Europe if Washington goes ahead with a planned missile
shield on Russia's borders.

Asked if the US military should respond in some way to Putin's warning,
Bush said that was not needed because: "Russia is not an enemy"

Responding to a question about whether his meeting with Putin in
Heiligendamm would be tense, Bush said: "I'll work to see to it, that
it's not (tense)."

Washington wants to site elements of its planned missile shield in Poland
and the Czech Republic. It says the systems are needed to defend against
possible missile attacks from what it calls "rogue states" such as Iran
and North Korea.

The Kremlin is fiercely opposed to the plan, saying the shield upsets the
global strategic balance. Putin has voiced suspicions that the project is
really targeted at Russia.

Differences over the dispute have brought US-Russian relations to their
lowest point in years and could overshadow a G8 summit intended to focus
on climate change and aid to Africa.

Chinese language - US, Japan to study missile defense system with Australia

WORLD / World Reaction

US, Japan to study missile defense system with Australia

(Agencies)
Updated: 2007-06-01 17:10

The United States and Japan plan to study a joint missile defense system
with Australia to counter growing threats in the Asia-Pacific region, a
Japanese government source said yesterday.

Tokyo and Washington have already begun installing a missile shield in
and around Japan to ward off potential threats from the Democratic
People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The government official said the new
plan also took into account the possibility of a Chinese missile threat
against Australia and Guam.

Officials from Japan, the United States and Australia agreed to study the
plan when they met in Tokyo in April, the source said.

"The basic tenet of the plan is to step up cooperation between the three
countries in the field of security in the Asia-Pacific region," said the
source, who declined to be identified.

The source declined to say whether Australia would go ahead and introduce
a missile defence system.

"But Australia appears quite willing to contribute to maintaining
security in the region, and the joint study program was worked out to
deal with the changing security situation in the region," he said.

The United States and Japan started planning a missile defense system
after the DPRK test-fired a ballistic missile, part of which flew over
Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean, in 1998.

Japan speeded up implementation of its missile defence program after the
DPRK fired a volley of missiles last July - trucking its first PAC-3
interceptors into a military base north of Tokyo in March.

The United States has PAC-3 land-based interceptors on the southern
island of Okinawa and SM-3 ship-to-air interceptors stationed at the
Japanese port of Yokosuka.

Officials from the three countries are expected to meet and discuss the
project later this year, the source said.

In March, Japan and Australia signed a ground-breaking defense pact that
the leaders of both countries stressed was not aimed at reining in China.

to free Premier League. No more free lunch in the future," said Tiansheng
TV president Song Zheng. "Fans can enjoy the games in various convenient
ways, and right now - they have to pay."

Win TV only has 40,000 subscribers at the moment, but thinks with its new
broadcast rights, Win TV is confident it can win over a legion of English
football fans. It also will provide coverage on cell phones, online along
with live TV.

But this latest development has enraged English footie fans in China who
have launched nationwide "Pay Boycott" over the Internet against
Tiansheng.

"188 yuan per month for one channel is too expensive for ordinary Chinese
fans who just earn 2,000-3,000 yuan (US$260-US$390) per month," a fan
ranted on a posting called "Farewell English soccer, Reject Tiansheng" on
a website forum yesterday.

"I remember British fans only paid 18 [English] pounds for 56 pay
channels and 47 pounds for 207 channels when I was in London in 2000,"
the fan added.

However, there were rumors of price differences on the Internet which
sparked discussion. Another fan on a website said that Tiansheng TV had
set the price of 688 yuan for a full season or 368 yuan for half season,
reduced by more than half of the planned 1,692 yuan for full season,
which would be a good news for fans if it was true.

But Miss Huang with the Business Development Department of Tiansheng TV
Company denied the fan's disclosure, saying she did not know much about
the pricing system, and that the final price would be released a few days
later.

"We will definitely not subcontract the broadcasting rights to other
domestic local TV stations because we offered US$50 million for it," she
said. We look forward to having more fans subscribe tothe channel."

Tiansheng also denied a report saying it will invite former CCTV
commentator Huang Jianxiang to host the EPL games.

"Huang has signed a contract with Phoenix TV in Hong Kong, so that's
impossible unless Huang breaks his promise," Miss Huang clarified.

"We will host a press conference before mid-June to tell the fans what
they want to know," Huang added.

Song Zheng, CEO of Tiansheng TV, speaks during a press conference hosted
by Tiansheng Eurosoccer Channel in Beijing February 12, 2007. Tiansheng
won the broadcast rights over six other bidders by an offer of US$50
million for three seasons of the English Premier League.[photo: sina]
"Tiansheng's pay TV has to be transmitted via local cable TV networks.
And as we know, the cable TV networks work closely with local TV stations
in China. If they jointly reject Tiansheng's access to the networks,
Tiansheng will suffer a big blow," an insider told a reporter. "I believe
both Tiansheng and the local TV stations are willing to reach a deal."

"Our negotiation with Tiansheng is under way, and anything is possible.
We are trying our best," said a person responsible for BTV-6 or Beijing
TV Station Sports Channel last night. "We are not sure BTV will relay it
from the beginning of next season, but Beijing soccer fans could watch
the games after two or three rounds."

To go around paying for the subscription, some fans recommended a website
called myp2p.eu which will webcast all the English Premier League games
for free.

Before the end of last season, China's 30 million Premiership addicts
could watch games live on ESPN-Star, a joint venture between Walt Disney
Co. and News Corp., via a local cable TV broadcasting service, at a much
lower monthly cost.

Tiansheng TV beat out CCTV and ESPN to win the rights. The company will
also broadcast a range of European soccer matches, including the
Premiership, Italy's Serie A, Spain's La Liga and Germany's Bundesliga.
The network also covers league matches in Japan and South Korea.

"We will broadcast all the games of the Chinese overseas players; we have
won the rights of 18 events worldwide," said Song .

The rescue team searching for the Kenya Airlines plane missing in
Cameroon is seen on a road in a thick forest between Mvengue and Lolodorf
in south Cameroon May 6, 2007. The wreckage of a Kenya Airways plane that
crashed with 114 people on board was found in a swamp a short distance
from Cameroon's Douala airport on Sunday, officials said, but there was
no word of any survivors. [Reuters]

MBANGA PONGO, Cameroon - A Kenya Airways plane that crashed after takeoff
in Cameroon with 114 people on board is largely submerged in a swamp and
there is no chance of survivors, Cameroon's civil protection service said
on Monday.

The Boeing 737-800 vanished early on Saturday shortly after leaving
Douala for Nairobi in torrential rain. The aircraft was found late on
Sunday not far from Douala airport after nearly two days of fruitless
searches in the south of the country.

"There are no chances that there will be any survivors because almost the
entire body of the plane was buried inside the swamp," Jean-Pierre Nana,
director of Cameroon's civil protection department and a member of a
crisis working group set up by the prime minister, told Reuters.

The passengers and crew hailed from 27 nations.

Early on Monday, rescuers battled through swamps and thick forest to
reach the wreckage after parts of the aircraft were found late on Sunday
in a swamp, and locals reported making grim discoveries in the thick bush.

"I saw one body and one arm," resident Guiffo Gande told reporters in
Mbanga Pongo village, an area of dense mangrove swamps some 20 km (12.4
miles) east of Douala.

"We also saw some seats and a piece of plane about the size of a car
door," Gande said, adding that he had not seen the plane's fuselage,
engines or tail.

The crash has again thrown the spotlight on air safety in Africa, the
continent with the world's worst record.

It has also dealt a severe blow to the image of Kenya Airways, one of the
most successful and modern companies in the east African nation.

Rescue efforts resumed near the village at daybreak.

Search aircraft flew overhead, as troops and police carrying gas masks
and plastic bags gathered at the end of a muddy road and then hacked deep
into the waterlogged forest.

"The crash site is about 4-6 kms (2.5-4 miles) from the end of this
road," said local gendarmerie commander Emmanuel Meka, telling
journalists they were allowed no further for now.

"Last night we saw lots of mud, but it was dark. So we do not know what
we will see today."

Cameroon's state minister for territorial administration, Hamidou Yaya
Marafa, said the rescue operation was entering a "new painful phase."

"Our task will be more difficult now, the task of recovering the
corpses," he said late on Sunday.

The crash site is more than 100 km (60 miles) from where radar-equipped
helicopters, ground search parties and villagers on motorbikes spent most
of the weekend combing tropical forest.

Kenya Airways Group Managing Director Titus Naikuni said in Nairobi that
local fishermen had led rescuers to the crash site.

He gave no details as to why the plane crashed.

Five Chinese identified

The six-month-old aircraft was carrying 105 passengers and nine crew,
most of them African, with others from China, India, Europe and
elsewhere. It had originated in Ivory Coast.

Five Chinese passengers have been identified as a Kenyan Airways aircraft
they were traveling on went missing earlier Saturday morning, the Chinese
Embassy in Cote d'Ivoire confirmed on Saturday.

Three of the five Chinese, two men and one woman, boarded the Boeing
737-800 in Abidjan, the economic capital of Cote d'Ivoire, where the
aircraft took off and was bound for Kenya's capital Nairobi via
Cameroon's coastal city of Douala, the embassy said.

The three were identified as Jiang Xuedong, a Chinese company employee
based in Cote d'Ivoire, Bian Jingzhong and Shi Weisha, a couple doing
business in Abidjan, the embassy said.

While the identities of the other two men, who boarded the flight KQ-507
in Douala, had been already known. One victim was identified as Liu
Sheng, an employee from the Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd based in
southern booming city of Shenzhen. Another was Wu Changgen, a businessman
from eastern China's Jiangsu Province.

Chinese School - 18,000 strip for artist's photo

WORLD / America

18,000 strip for artist's photo

(AP)

Thousands of naked volunteers pose for U.S. photographer Spencer Tunick
at Mexico City's Zocalo square May 6, 2007. A record 18,000 people took
off their clothes to pose for Tunick on Sunday in Mexico City's Zocalo
square, the heart of the ancient Aztec empire.

MEXICO CITY - More than 18,000 people stripped down and bared it all in
Mexico City's vast main square Sunday for US photographer Spencer
Tunick's biggest nude shoot yet.

Standing up to salute, crouching in fetal positions and lying prone on
the tiles of the Zocalo plaza, the volunteers formed a sea of flesh that
Tunick snapped from balconies and a small crane in the morning light.

"What a moment for the Mexican art scene!" Tunick said in a news
conference. "I think all eyes are looking south from the United Sates to
Mexico City to see how a country can be free and treat the naked body as
art. Not as pornography or as a crime, but with happiness and caring."

The Brooklyn, N.Y., artist has become famous for photographing thousands
of naked people in public settings worldwide, from London and Vienna to
Buenos Aires and Buffalo.

But the Mexico City shoot dwarfed all others. Previously his best turnout
had been 7,000 models in Barcelona in 2003.

"I just create shapes and forms with human bodies. It's an abstraction,
it's a performance, it's an installation," Tunick said. "So I don't care
how many people showed up. All I know is that I filled up my space."

The heart of this city since it was founded by the Aztecs in 1325, the
Zocalo measures about 21,000 square yards the size of five football
fields.

Men and women from a broad cross section of ages and social classes began
arriving before dawn, although most volunteers were young men.

"The important thing is not that it's your body or someone else's but
that you participate in something as a society," said Oscar Roman Munoz,
a 25-year-old engineer. "This reflects the need for change and
integration in world trends."

For Tunick's first photo, the models stood upright and gave a
military-like salute to their national flag. In another, they lay down to
form a blanket of flesh around a naked man in a wheelchair. Between
shots, they burst out into verses of Mexican folk songs such as "Cielito
Lindo."

Public nudity is hardly a novelty in Mexico City, where protesters often
march through the streets wearing only their underwear or nothing at all.
